Responsible Gambling
Gambling should be entertainment, not a way to make money. If gambling is no longer fun or you feel out of control, support is available in New Zealand.
In an emergency or immediate danger: call 111 (NZ).
Play safely (practical steps)
- Set a budget you can afford to lose and stop when it’s reached.
- Set a time limit (e.g., a fixed session length) and take regular breaks.
- Avoid gambling when stressed, tired, upset, or under the influence of alcohol/drugs.
- Don’t chase losses. Losses are part of gambling and not “due to turn around”.
- Keep track of spending and time across all sites and products.
- Gambling is for adults. If you are under 18, do not gamble.
Limit and control tools
If the gambling service you use offers these features, consider enabling them:
Spend limits
Deposit, loss, or wager limits (daily/weekly/monthly).
Session limits
Time caps and automatic log-out / reality checks.
Cool-down (timeout)
Short breaks (e.g., 24 hours to several weeks) during which you can’t play.
Account closure
Close your account if gambling is no longer manageable.
Self-exclusion (longer-term)
Self-exclusion is a formal way to block yourself from gambling for a set period. Where available, you can request self-exclusion directly with the operator you use. You may be asked to:
- Choose the duration (often months to years).
- Confirm identity details to prevent re-opening a new account.
- Remove marketing/bonus communications.
Consider adding device or network blocking tools (e.g., site/app blockers) and restricting access to payment methods to support your decision.
